| ACRC Picnic Connects the Community |
| By Dan Groth |
Over five-hundred guests showed up at the UEL building on Thursday, July 26 for the Academic and Corporate Relations Center’s second annual summer barbecue amidst monsoon-like conditions. Tents were set up and drinks were ready to be served outside as people began to arrive, but heavy rain and strong winds forced the crew to pack up and bring everything inside within the first ten minutes. Fortunately, the UEL building’s indoor meeting space was large enough to accommodate the guests, helping make this year’s event a success despite the weather.
Attendees included members of the Minnesota business community, University faculty, and tenants of the UEL building. Hundreds of people had the opportunity to make business connections at the event, meeting the ACRC’s objectives of bringing people together and facilitating collaboration between the University and business communities. In addition, guests were able to socialize while enjoying delicious food, an open bar, and ice cream from the university’s own Dairy Salesroom (part of the Department of Food Science and Nutrition).
“Minnesota businesspeople always tell me that the barbecue is their favorite event of the year,” says ACRC director Dick Sommerstad. “The reason is because we’re able to bring so many chief executive officers, entrepreneurs, and other executives into the same room as University officials. It’s just an invitation for collaboration, and every year it generates new productive relationships.”
Held in conjunction with the ACRC barbecue was an open house and dedication of the new space for the Minnesota Lions Eye Bank. More than 200 Lions and guests attended the opening, which included a dedication of a conference room in memory of Lion George Dugan, who led the founding of the eye bank nearly 50 years ago. The Minnesota Lions Eye Bank, part of the University of Minnesota’s Department of Ophthalmology, obtains, medically evaluates, and distributes donor eye tissue for corneal transplants, research, and education.
“We appreciate the support we’ve received in moving to our new location,” says Jackie Malling, executive director. “Our new location will support our mission as we serve donor family members, cornea recipients and surgeons.” |

U of M hosts first-ever NACRO summit |
On August 16-17, the University of Minnesota hosted the first meeting of the National Association of Corporate Relations Officers (NACRO). The event attracted approximately 100 leaders from 64 different research universities.
Day 1 focused exposing best practices and trends as they relate to corporate relations practices at research universities. Individual speakers and panels gave rise to exciting discussion that carried on into the Mississippi boat cruise later in the evening.
Day 2 set to informally formalize a network of corporate relations officers interested in furthering the efforts as they relate to research universities forming comprehensive and mutually beneficial relationships with industry, both public and private. Continued professional development through sharing and leveraging tactics and strategy as well as benchmarking and metrics of success were important to the group. |

| Life Sciences Come Together |
| By Jenna Williams, ACRC Writer |
The McNamara Alumni Center was bustling early Thursday, February 15 as the Academic and Corporate Relations Center’s (ACRC) Life Science Business Community Workshop got underway. Business representatives from across the state and across borders congregated with University of Minnesota faculty and enjoyed presentations, breakfast, and conversation.
The ACRC put on the Life Science Business Community Workshop as an opportunity to showcase exciting University research and innovation in life science and to bring together audiences from the business and research community. Many University departments, centers, institutes, laboratories, and offices were also present at the workshop, promoting their services and resources. ACRC was also on display, showcasing its online tool, Announce.
Some highlights of the day included presentations on the University’s new Stroke Center by Dr. Afshin Divani and the new Institute for Therapeutics Discovery & Development by Dr. Vadim Gurvich. Other presentations covered topics including stem cell research, cardiac devices, Alzheimer’s imaging, drug delivery devices, and many more.
This workshop was part of a Business Community Workshop (BCW) series hosted by ACRC that includes three to five workshops each year on various topics of research and science. This session’s topic, life science (also known as bioscience) refers to any of several branches of science, such as biology, medicine, anthropology, or ecology, that deal with living organisms, their organization, life processes, and relationships to each other and their environment. Past workshop topics have included digital technology and nanotechnology.
The workshops get a great response from attendees. “I liked the diversity of the subjects and the displays of the various University centers that were present,” says one participant. Along with the complements, one common complaint heard from attendees was that they want more! Lucky for them, two more workshops can be expected in this year’s series this coming May and September. Topics are yet to be decided.

| UEL Winter Open House a Success |
| By Jenna Williams, ACRC Writer |
The Academic and Corporate Relations Center (ACRC) and University Enterprise Laboratories, Inc. (UEL) hosted an open house for the public on Tuesday, January 30. Over 700 visitors perused through the building, checked out displays, talked to experts, and made connections with colleagues. The crowd was made up of investors, University of Minnesota faculty and staff, industry and start-up executives, researchers, consultants, and many others.
This event celebrated the opening of Academic and Corporate Relations Center and the Office for Technology Commercialization, which manages patent and licensing functions and assists in the creation of University-based start-up companies.
ACRC put the spotlight on their new Web site tool, Announce. This service connects individuals with resources at the University and throughout the business community, keeping clients up to date on news, events, and announcements. Announce was demonstrated at the open house, and attendees were able to register for the free service on the spot.
The open house also brought awareness to the operations and opportunities at UEL, along with giving those present a chance to create new networks and connections. Some of the other tenants featured included Isurtec, Andx, Cima NanoTech, Gel-Del Technologies, Syntiron, and Optomec. Displays were set up all throughout the building, along with food and beverages for participants to enjoy.
“The event was a success beyond our expectations,” said ACRC director, Dick Sommerstad. “Events like these are only successful if people attend, and we had 700 people interacting from all segments of business.”
If you missed this winter open house, don’t worry. An upcoming summer barbeque will give you another opportunity to meet the tenants at UEL and members of the University of Minnesota.
