Affordance Perception-Action Laboratory

Last Updated: 04/01/2009

The perceptual guidance of action, and the use of movement to obtain perceptual information are two central aspects of behavior. APAL is a leader in quantitative research in on relations between perception and action. Our focus is on the integration of perception and action in the context of affordances. Affordances are relations between properties of the environment and properties of the organism that have consequences for behavior. Affordances are directly relevant to the success of our interactions with the environment. We study movements that are used to gain information about affordances. Our research straddles the boundary between basic and applied science. Our research on “basic” issues has implications for the design and use of human-machine systems, and our research on “applied” issues has implications for general theories of affordance perception-action. Our applied work relates primarily to the Human Factors of perception and action in virtual environments.

Feminist Studies

Interdisciplinary graduate program

Last Updated: 12/11/2008

The Feminist Studies graduate program provides rigorous interdisciplinary training that enables students to conduct scholarly research and analysis both within and outside the academy. Our courses excite students by making clear how research, education, and social change go hand in hand. Our research and teaching interests are tied closely to the expertise of our faculty. Gender, class, race, and sexuality; science, health, and environmental ethics; migration, transnational spaces, and citizenship; collaboration, community, and feminist politics; representation and social inequities; globalization, culture, and power–are at the center of the department’s pedagogical mission. Feminist Studies is located within the Department of Gender, Women and Sexuality Studies. It offers students not just a chance to read and create theory, develop new methods for analyzing the world, or sharpen their critical thinking skills–but also the intellectual tools for envisioning a better society and enacting social change.

Last Updated: 12/19/2008

When the University of Minnesota's Initiative for Renewable Energy and the Environment launched in 2003, topics like climate change, greenhouse gas emissions, biofuels and energy security were just entering the mainstream dialogue. Since then, IREE has quickly become a central part of Minnesota's renewable energy economy, mobilizing nearly 400 experts around one vital mission: "to promote statewide economic development, sustainable, healthy, and diverse ecosystems, and national energy security through development of bio-based and other renewable resources and processes." The 2007 Minnesota State Legislature renewed IREE funding, which is now at the level of $5 million per year. Also in 2007, IREE became a signature program of the Institute on the Environment. IREE will continue to support research in areas relevant to renewable energy and the environment with a variety of grant mechanisms available to University of Minnesota faculty teams. IREE also seeks and supports the expertise and resources of private business and industry, state public agencies, and the nonprofit sector. Faculty funded by IREE have attracted substantial support from state and federal government and private industry.

Institute for Social, Economic, and Ecological Sustainability (ISEES)

Last Updated: 12/12/2008

The Institute for Social, Economic and Ecological Sustainability (ISEES) was initiated in July 1996 to strengthen the University of Minnesota’s capacity to analyze sustainability issues and recommend options for moving toward sustainability. Our vision is based on the fundamental idea that sustainable relationships between the social, economic and ecological spheres of the world are possible and desirable. ISEES brings together people from the natural and social sciences and practitioners to analyze sustainability issues and recommend options for moving toward sustainability. We believe that the development of options for sustainability requires integrating social, economic, and ecological factors. ISEES is currently hosting the University of Minnesota Ecosystem Science and Sustainability Initiative with a generous grant from the Archibald Bush Foundation since 2004. The goal is to explore how ecosystems and socio-economic systems can work hand-in-hand for the long-term benefit of all. Working with faculty from across the University, the Initiative has launched a new Sustainability Studies Minor at the UMN, is conducting research on Minnesota's environmental future to the year 2050, and runs outreach programs for teachers and journalists, and the public.

Toxicology (All-University)

Interdisciplinary graduate program

Last Updated: 12/11/2008

This University-wide program provides comprehensive training in the broad scope of toxicology. Toxicology, the science of poisons, is devoted to identifying and characterizing the risk associated with exposures to potential noxious agents in our environment. Although most chemical agents at sufficiently large doses may be toxic, not all present a significant risk to human health or to environmental organisms or ecosystems. Accordingly, the essence of the science of toxicology is defining the fine line which distinguishes a risk from a residue. To accomplish this requires scientific expertise in such areas as analytical and environmental chemistry, biology, and mathematics. Advanced courses and research are also available in such subdisciplines as human health risk assessment; epidemiology; environmental chemistry and engineering; ecotoxicology; food additive and nutritional toxicology; biochemical and physiological mechanisms; histopathology; diagnostic and analytical toxicology; drug metabolism; chemical carcinogenesis; behavioral toxicology; and the toxicity of noxious agents to various organ systems.
